Slow Squares

Binary

Filled and hollow squares in equal measure — and never three alike in a row.

Binary — a binary puzzle, which you may know as Binario, or by other publishers’ names for it, Binairo and Takuzu — is a board of zeros and ones: every row and every column holds as many of one as of the other, nowhere three alike stand side by side, and no two rows and no two columns are the same. A few digits are given; the rest is the puzzle. On a screen a zero is a hollow square and a one a filled one: a tap walks a cell from empty to 1 to 0 and back, and the board tells you only what your own digits already say: three alike in a row, a digit its line has too many of and two lines that read the same take a reddish wash. Nothing is ever marked as “must be the other digit” — with two digits, that would be the answer.

A new board every day — 6 × 6, 10 × 10, and 14 × 14 — the same for everybody, each with a single solution that reasoning alone reaches. No timer and no account needed: a board left half-done waits for you until the day turns, at midnight UTC.

How to play

Fill every empty cell with a hollow square or a filled one, so that each row and each column holds as many of one as of the other.

Never three alike side by side — not in a row, not in a column.

No two rows read the same, and no two columns do either.

Tap a cell for a filled square, tap again for a hollow one, once more to clear it. The squares the board came with stay put: tap one and they all give a shake, to show which they are.

Shown in red: three of the same kind side by side, squares a row or column has too many of, and two lines that read the same.

Solved: three hollow and three filled in every row and every column, nowhere three alike together, and no two lines the same.
