Slow Squares

Printable Wednesday Frog puzzles

Wednesday Frog is a logic puzzle on a square pond with frogs, lily pads and stones. Every frog hops three times — on Monday, on Tuesday and on Wednesday — always straight, two squares, over the square beside it. On Monday and Tuesday it lands on water, on Wednesday on a lily pad, one frog to each pad. Every stone must be hopped over exactly once, and no square is used twice.

Every day there is a new board in each of three sizes, dealt to everybody alike and solvable without a single guess. Pick a size, print the sheet, and take it wherever a screen would not go — a pencil is all it takes. Each hop is a line from the square the frog sits on to the square it lands on; the day can be written beside it, and a cross marks a square that is already ruled out.

How to play

Every frog hops three times: on Monday, on Tuesday and on Wednesday.

A hop goes straight up, down, left or right and always ends two squares away: the frog hops over the square beside it and lands just beyond it.

A frog may hop only over water or a stone, never over a lily pad or over any frog’s starting square.

On Monday and Tuesday a frog lands on water, and on Wednesday on a lily pad. Exactly one frog lands on each lily pad.

Every stone must be hopped over exactly once. No frog may land on a stone.

No square is used twice, not even on another day or after the frog has left it: not to start from, to land on or to hop over.

Tap a frog, then the square it should hop to. Tapping a square the chosen frog has landed on takes back that hop and every one after it.

With Crosses on, tapping a square puts a cross on it or takes it off. Crosses are your own notes; the game does not check them.

Solved: Mo, Tu and We mark where each frog landed, and on which day. Every stone was hopped over exactly once, and one frog sits on each lily pad.

Questions people ask

Is it free?
Yes. The sheets, the boards on the site and the archive are free, without an account and without advertising. The PDFs are made once a day and anyone may download them.
How many puzzles are there a day?
One new board a day at each level — 6 × 6, 8 × 8, and 9 × 9 — the same for everybody, dealt at midnight UTC. Earlier days stay downloadable in the archive below.
Do I need to sign up?
No. Every sheet downloads without an account. An account only keeps your online plays and your streak in one place across your devices.
Does every puzzle have exactly one solution?
Yes. Every board is checked to have a single solution and to be solvable by reasoning alone — no guessing is ever needed. The solution is not printed; the sheet holds the puzzle and the rules.
May I hand the sheets out or use them in a classroom?
Yes — print, photocopy and hand them out as you like, for a class, a club or a waiting room. Only leave the credit line at the foot of the sheet where it is.
